WHAT’S UNDER EVERYTHING                                                                   July 7, 1996

yesterday i was at a barn sale in fairfax, looking for some buttons. inside the huge beige dry barn, i was poking around looking at old pie plates, orange squeezers, baskets and green glass dishes. it was dim. it was damp. in the background, i heard an unfamiliar chirping humming noise coming from above.. moving to the east corner in the colored glassware section, i looked to see what was happening.

i was directly under the scene of the commotion. a nest of bird babies with parent birds flying in food. first one, followed by the other. they moved so fast ti was hard to tell who ti was there. the barn keeper said both mom and dad birds were doing food runs. each time an adult came near the nest there would be an uproar. the loudest bird possibly yelling got the meal. the nest was tucked next to a wood beam. it was a privilege to see, what was usually a private scene in the feathered world, was revealed, while shopping for buttons in a barn.

i’ve come to expect wonders like this living in the country. i hear things that are happening around me.
there is time to hear the natural world. this reveals some designs that are under everything. what’s under everything is too quiet to be heard.
